Art Reimagined

Design. Upcycled. Inspired.

  • Artist & Architect – IAHNAK & KNS Architects

Humans are a part of nature, not apart from nature, and it is the work of nature to create. Every hobby, interest, and artistic ability ever learned comes in service when the need for it arises. What started as simply doodling on page corners and the back of notebooks, today finds itself etched into this collection of art by Mumbai based architect and artist – Kanhai Gandhi.

Born into an affluent family of finance and business professionals, Kanhai has always been deeply connected to family traditions and culture. After he graduated from the Academy of Architecture, Kanhai co-founded ‘KNS Architects’ - an award winning, global design firm famous for its incredible designs in the commercial, recreational, hospitality and residential spaces.

However, an unfortunate financial crisis shattered reality the way he knew it, and thus Kanhai turned to art to express his emotions.

Emotions are energies, and energy can’t be changed – it can only be transformed.

Art became Kanhai’s medium of transforming his experiences into alluring designs which reflect his profound and authentic understanding of occurrences in nature, relationships with people, and patterns of behaviour. His extensive travels and keen interest in history and photography all serve as inspiration for his designs. He believes that change is the only constant and approaches every new project with an eclectic perspective.

iahnak – a wordplay on ‘ainak’ meaning ‘glasses’ in Hindi, thus stands to showcase life, lessons and emotions as witnessed by the artist.

  • Founder of LPJ Studios

Renowned designer Hedwig Bouley started the LPJ Studios project in 2015 as a pioneering step towards a new, more sustainable approach to fashion and textile industry. Despite having worked with leading names in fashion in Germany such as Strenesse, René Lezard, Marc O’Polo, and Maerz München, Hedwig had an unshakeable feeling of ‘not doing enough’ to revolutionize fashion and create something that would last beyond one season. While fashion is also art and a medium of self-expression, Hedwig couldn’t ignore the huge amount of waste created in the process of designing a new collection of clothes. Thus challenging the ‘throwaway mentality,’ Hedwig founded LPJ Studios to make a virtue out of that wasted resources and began creating home accessories using design remnants.

LPJ Studios, named after her children Lisa, Paul, and Joseph, tours across Germany to collect ‘recyclables’ as most fashion companies are simply grateful to have meaningful and stylish things being created out of otherwise wasted fabrics. What started as simple patchwork carpets has now ventured into plaids, woolen blankets, as well as large, colorful cushions. With LPJ, Hedwig Bouley focuses on a fair and local production chain. She believes that design and sustainability do not have to be in conflict and focuses on creating a symbiosis through creativity.

An affinity for design, the know-how in craftsmanship, and the freedom to experiment with new processing techniques allow LPJ Studios to create something new, unique, and therefore, exceptional.

A collaboration as unique as the artists and their backgrounds, iahnak X LPJ studios bring to life iahnak’s stimulating artwork in the form of LPJ studios’ skillfully crafted wall art.

These tapestries are mostly produced using the punching process, a rare technique wherein the materials are worked into each other with the help of small needles. Each wall art needs to be felted once or twice depending on the design and layers of fabric. This one-of-a-kind piece is then hand finished by adding stripes, yarns and surfaces to the art.

What makes this wall art unique is not only the process of making it but also the commitment it upholds towards sustainability, and promise it fulfils of being kinder to the earth.
